Hail, fellow adventurers!
Pull up a chair, rest your weary feet, and lend this humble merchant your ears. I know this is a lengthy tale, but I hope you'll bear with me. It's a story of a Deep Gnome, his trusty donkey named Doordash, a few questionable business decisions, and the unexpected friendships made along the roads less traveled. But beneath this tale is something I'd genuinely like to discuss about Monsters & Memories, its player-driven economy, and the little inconveniences that sometimes bring us together.

Now, before I begin, I want to make something clear. This isn't a tale told out of bitterness toward the developers or a demand that the world be reshaped to suit one wandering merchant. We're in Early Access, the game is evolving, and I genuinely appreciate the thought and effort going into it. My hope is simply to share an experience, offer a perspective that might not be particularly common, and perhaps spark a constructive conversation about the world we're all helping to shape.

You see, I'm probably among the 1% of players who find more enjoyment in the journey, the trades, and the peculiar opportunities of the world than in the traditional pursuit of levels and experience. Don't get me wrong, I understand that leveling and grinding are a huge part of the game, and there's nothing wrong with enjoying that. But I've always been drawn to tradeskilling, exploring without consulting guides, figuring things out for myself, and discovering ways to make a living that don't necessarily involve sitting at a camp killing the same creatures for hours and somewhere along those roads, I stumbled into a profession I never expected to find.

A Traveling Merchant and His Mighty Donkey, Doordash
On the server of Tilustra, armed with little more than my Enchanter's spells, a ledger, and an ambitious donkey named Doordash, I decided to try my hand at becoming a traveling merchant. At level 13, I certainly wasn't some mighty adventurer. But I did have invisibility, invisibility versus undead, a willingness to explore dangerous places, and perhaps a questionable sense of self-preservation. I began noticing something about the adventurers I encountered. Groups would venture deep into dangerous areas, sometimes several zones away from civilization, and settle in for hours of hunting. Eventually, the firewood would run out, consumables would dwindle, bags would fill, and the weight of their hard-earned loot would begin to take its toll.

They faced a familiar dilemma: abandon valuable loot, interrupt the adventure for a long journey back to town, or simply make do without the supplies they'd forgotten, and that's when a thought occurred to me. What if, instead of adventurers having to return to civilization, a little piece of civilization could come to them?

Thus began my traveling merchant service. For a modest fee (well, modest by merchant standards), I would brave the roads, dungeons, and whatever hungry creatures happened to be lurking along the way to bring adventurers what they needed, or relieve them of what they could no longer carry.
I offered services like:

Delivering firewood, sharpening stones, spell reagents, and other consumables.
Currency exchanges at 110 copper per silver.
Purchasing excess loot at 75% of vendor value, calculated using my Commerce transactions and ledger.
Freeing up valuable inventory slots and carrying capacity so groups could continue camping.

Naturally, my services came at a premium. The convenience had value, and so did the risk I was taking.
I was running through the Vale of Zintar, dodging invisible spiders, or taking a 30-minute boat ride from Night Harbor to Keeper's Bight before swimming through shark-infested waters in Shallow Shoals to deliver a stack of wood for 10 silver. Was that the most efficient way to make money? Probably not.

But it was FUN.

I met players much higher level than myself, learned about camps I had never visited, explored dangerous areas, navigated factions, and developed a reputation with groups who regularly needed supplies. People started recognizing me and Doordash. I had effectively created a little profession that didn't exist as an official class or skill. Nobody assigned me that role. I wasn't following a quest or maximizing experience per hour. I simply found a need in the world and built something around it. That freedom is one of the things I love most about this game. Why Inventory Management and Inconvenience Mattered. One of the things that attracted me to Monsters & Memories was the development team's philosophy around "Community, Identity, and Reliance." The idea that even solo activities can contribute to a larger community, and that some degree of social friction is intentional, really resonates with me.

I feel like my traveling merchant service was a small example of that philosophy working naturally. Before the changes, bag slots and carrying capacity were valuable resources. A group deep in a dungeon might have hours of camping ahead of them, but their bags were filling up, their coin was weighing them down, and they were running out of supplies. They had decisions to make.

Do we destroy loot? Leave money on the ground? Head back to town? Invest in a donkey? Or pay somebody to come out here and help? Those decisions created opportunities for other players. A donkey costing roughly 2.6 gold is a significant investment, but it becomes an amazing quality-of-life improvement precisely because inventory space and weight matter.

I actually appreciate that kind of design. There are plenty of intentional inconveniences in Monsters & Memories. A Deep Elf can't simply walk freely through Night Harbor without dealing with faction consequences. Geography matters. Preparation matters. Your race, reputation, and decisions matter. I always viewed inventory limitations as part of that same philosophy: inconveniences that encourage preparation, meaningful choices, and cooperation and sometimes those inconveniences create entire opportunities for player-driven interactions that wouldn't otherwise exist.

What Changed?

Prior to the loot and medallion changes, I was averaging around 3-4 traveling merchant requests a day. Since the patch, I've received zero. I realize that's anecdotal, and the patch is still recent. I'm not claiming my experience represents the entire server, or that every player is experiencing the same thing, but the change has been dramatic for me. Medallions are extremely light, stack to 20, and replace some of the heavier, bulkier loot and coin players previously carried. Combined with fewer equipment drops and reduced loose coin, players seem to have much less need to offload inventory during extended camps.

I understand from the patch notes that part of the goal was to make more creatures financially rewarding and provide more consistent cash loot. I can absolutely appreciate that goal, but I wonder whether we've unintentionally removed some of the logistical challenges that encouraged player interaction. The change didn't just affect the value of loot. It effectively eliminated the demand for a service I had built around the previous system.

I think that's the distinction I really want to emphasize.

What concerns me isn't the loss of my merchant income. It's the possibility that by removing an inconvenience, we've also removed a reason for players to rely on one another. That reliance led to friendships, reputations, unexpected adventures, and interactions that might never have happened otherwise.

I'm not arguing that everyone should suffer through inventory management just so I can make a few silver. Nor am I saying that every inconvenience needs to remain in the game. I'm asking whether there's a balance where convenience can be improved without removing the opportunities that inconvenience sometimes creates.

The Commerce System and Creating Your Own Experience
The Commerce system in this game is incredible. The interaction between Commerce skill, charisma, racial considerations, faction standing, and transaction thresholds is genuinely one of the most interesting merchant systems I've encountered in an MMO. I love that complexity and I especially love being able to take those systems and build something around them that the developers didn't necessarily prescribe.

My little merchant business combined Commerce, exploration, class abilities, player reputation, tradeskilling, and the economy into something uniquely my own. It made the world feel alive without requiring me to spend every evening grinding experience. More importantly, it made me feel like I was contributing something to the world and the community, even as a relatively low-level character. I wasn't the strongest adventurer or the highest-level crafter. I was just a guy with some spells, a ledger, a donkey, and a willingness to go places other people didn't want to travel back from and somehow, that was enough to carve out my own little place in the world.

I'd love to see more opportunities like that grow as the game develops.

The Discussion I'd Like to Have - Are we unintentionally sacrificing parts of a living, player-driven economy and community in the pursuit of convenience? And should every inventory inconvenience necessarily be removed?

I don't have a perfect solution, and I'm not even certain reverting the changes would be the right approach.

Perhaps there's another way to preserve meaningful inventory management, logistics, or player-provided services while still achieving the economic goals behind the patch.

I'd genuinely love to hear the developers' perspective on how they envision inventory pressure, weight, Commerce, and player-created economic roles fitting together in the long term.

I'd also be interested in hearing from other players. Have you noticed similar unintended consequences? Are there other unusual ways you play the game that depend on systems most players consider inconvenient? Is there a better balance between convenience and creating reasons for players to interact with one another?

I know my way of playing is unusual. I'm not asking for the game to be designed around me. I just hope that as the game evolves, we continue to consider the experiences that emerge naturally from its systems, not only the experiences those systems were originally designed to provide.

To me, that's one of the most exciting things about Monsters & Memories. The game gives us a world with meaningful systems, limitations, and consequences, and then lets us figure out what to do with them. Sometimes that means becoming a great adventurer. Sometimes it means becoming a master crafter and sometimes it means becoming a traveling merchant who risks his life delivering firewood to people who forgot to bring enough.

I'd hate to see those kinds of opportunities disappear unintentionally.

Thanks for reading, and please keep the discussion respectful. The developers are people, this is Early Access, and we're all here because we want to see the game succeed.
