Nefarious In a well-oiled group that is playing optimally, burst damage is almost never needed. It's been that way in every MMO for 30 years, and that's kinda how it should be. While there are certainly times when burst damage can save the day, those instances are exceedingly rare.
Building an entire class and/or encounters around having burst damage would difficult and counterproductive in my opinion.
You need to play MMOs that weren't made in the previous millennium. There are too many examples to pick from just WoW vanilla + TBC.
Nefarious I would much rather they build gameplay and combat around strategy than brute force.
Burst damage is a valid strategy if the game's design allows for it.
Nefarious Sustained DPS across all DPS classes should be comparable at least.
Strongly disagree. I'm all in for support tax. Take FFXI Corsairs as a good example. Or Lost Ark's damage contribution post-fight breakdowns which show how much DPS the supports provided. The devs also have stated that this is their design intent: DPS classes with more utility will do less DPS than DPS classes with less utility.
Nefarious A 10-15% margin would be fine, but having Wizards be 30-40% behind in sustained DPS because they're capable of burst is not ideal. The trade off for burst is often having subsequent downtime. Sure, the Wizard can blow their entire mana bar to do 3x DPS of a Rogue for 1 fight, but then they're going to have to med for 5 minutes doing 0 DPS while the Rogue is still doing his thing.
I don't see the trade-off of more burst for less sustain as being a problem if it means that the Wizard blowing his load deletes multiple enemies in quick succession during a pull gone wrong, or uses his mana to burst down a named mob. I understand that this isn't the case right now, but the idea is solid from a gameplay and design perspective.
Nefarious Not to mention, that level of burst also carries risk of the Wizard pulling aggro and getting himself and/or everyone else killed.
If the Wizard is meant to be a burst class, than the tank/Wizard class design needs to accommodate this too.
Mesh DPS Means damage per second. There is no such thing as "burst DPS."
Doing a lot of damage on one mob and then having to sit out the next 3 pulls makes Wizards bad at DPS.
I'm flabbergasted. I don't even know how to reply to this without being insulting.
Nyx I don't care about how things were in EQ. This isn't EQ. I don't care about what other games were like. I care about this game. The devs have stated they're making their own game. So lets stop talking about how things were in EQ. I understand the crowd/audience, but the crowd/audience needs to stop trying to compare this class to the Wiz class in EQ because they're actively trying to make their own game and not create an EQ clone.
Marry me.
Nyx They will find it much easier to adjust the wizards damage profile and numbers than they will trying to change the meta and content of the game.
The devs have mentioned multiple times that they will increase the game's difficulty over time. Giving mobs special abilities and nerfing the blatantly overpowered abilities like Charm is part of the process. Having burst damage as a tool they tune content around and as a tool they hand down to players certainly is something they add to the game, if they do end up deciding to go further down the Wizard = burst kings route. I'd certainly welcome some camps and encounters where burst is more important than sustained damage.
Taron Makes me wonder if every DPS class forum is full of posts claiming they are the worst at damage.
Go check out the Shaman forum.
@Nyx Since you seem to have done extensive testing I have a question for you: how much do the resist break spells from Druid/Eles affect resist rates? I know it makes a massive difference against +3 and +4 mobs, but I'm wondering if you have a number to the obvious observable reality.
