Pet threat

So I'm a level 19 BST with decent equipment I pulled over from my 13 RNG when I swapped, some pieces I bought, and a Steel Greatsword that I was gifted. I mention my gear because my entire journey so far, my pet has failed to tank for me. Whether I use a Crocodile or Wasp, with Savage or Guardian spirit, my pet can just not hold threat. My crocs growl might snatch it from me for a moment with Guardian spirit but I'm quickly main tank again.

Looking for the experience of other Beastmasters, can your pet hold threat? What is your gear like in comparison to your level? Does Kill command generate threat for us or our companion? If you've had no issues with your pet, what are you doing to help your pet manage threat? Is this an issue that has already been discussed in discord?

Because you are using a steel great sword at 19. That’s by far considered a twink item at that level. You are doing too much dmg for your pet to keep threat. Just auto swing instead of hitting abilities if you want it to keep threat or give it a head start. You can also use the ability reset spell to let it double taunt.

As soon as you hit 20th and your pet levels up to 20th it will start to double attack which should help it keep up better with your dmg/threat, but pets still can struggle based on gear/buffs until the 30s and even until 36th once they start to dual wield. After that between autos/growl they should be able to keep agro off you in most situations

I kind of figured my Greatsword wasn't helping but I also know that there were damage checks in place so I wasn't sure to what extent. I didn't know about double attack and dual wield for pets though so that's awesome. Looking forward to 20 even more now.

When fighting Greens (level 25 here) I try to do most of the tanking so I level up my defensive skills 🙂 (this has gotten sooo much nicer with the buff to Lick Wounds). Fighting blues and higher, I have my pet stay put, pull to it, then have it assist me while I back off. I use kill command and have it cast it's root if it hasn't already (I mainly use a spider). I then immediately use Invigorate Companion, use kill command and root again and sit down till kill command comes of cooldown. Then I'll Pounce to the mob and attack open up with enraging strike, another kill command and then chop. I never pull aggro off my spider once it's cycled through 2 kill commands and 2 roots and it's own dps. I don't know how others do it, but I've doing that since around level 15 and it works well for me.

I also have a weapon that is above my level and I find its best to step back every so often and let my pet regain a little threat. Even with guardian spirit and command: protect, I can out aggro my pet pretty handily if I go ham.

Mihr It doesnt even taking going ham in mid 20s to late 30s, I can literally just AA and rip threat off with decent gear. It gets really bad if i do actually use a skill.

Back in the day when my BST was SUPER twinked at 15 my pet held aggro by me sitting on my ass for 15 - 30 seconds when the fight started then jumping in. By then the pet had put up so much aggro that by the time I'd catch up the mob would be dead. This also helps with medding/mana regen if you're healing/invirgorating your pet a lot.
