An RP Server Designed to Create Stories
So here's my proposed RP server ruleset.
• First-person perspective locked
• Proximity VOIP
• No nameplates
• No /who
• Text chat limited to /say, /shout, and /tell
• Contested Dungeons

What I Think Each Rule Brings to the Game

First-Person Perspective
This makes you your character.
No orbit camera peeking around corners or over walls. It makes exploration more immersive and every dungeon, forest, and cave feel more dangerous because you can only react to what your character could actually see.

Proximity VOIP
This is the heart of the experience.
Merchants hawking their wares in the night market.
A lost adventurer desperately calling for help in the middle of a sandstorm.
Someone sprinting past your group screaming, "TRAIN!"
Your tank begging for a heal while you try to tell him you're out of mana.
Those are the moments people remember.
*I do think this kind of system benefits from a one-character-per-server rule, although it isn't really necessary. Let's be honest—we're all alt-aholics. But it would be nice to know that when you hear a familiar voice around a corner, it's actually that character, not just one of the player's fifteen alts that all sound exactly the same.

No Nameplates
Floating names are one of the biggest immersion breakers in MMOs.
Who needs them?
Click on someone if you want to inspect them. Consider them if you want to judge their strength. Let your brain learn to recognize people by their armor, weapons, and appearance instead of reading a glowing label floating over their heads. It's an RP server. You're standing in town. Turn off the UI and actually mingle with people.

No /who
You have VOIP.
You have /shout.
Ask if anyone is around. If you see another adventurer, hail them and ask if they've seen anyone nearby.
You don't need to be omniscient to roleplay.

/say, /shout, and /tell Only
Honestly, I'd almost go even further.
I'd keep /say and /shout, but make /tell require a crafted pair of communication items that both players have to carry in their inventories before they can communicate remotely.
Again, this isn't meant to be the fastest or most efficient way to reach max level.
It's an RP server.
We don't need global chat channels constantly feeding information to everyone on the server.

Contested Dungeon Zones
Let's put a little danger back into people's lives.
Inside indoor dungeons, text chat is disabled and PvP is enabled
Picture this - A group of players is relaxing in Wyrmsbane, clearing zombies near Timmons. They're laughing, talking loudly over VOIP, and completely focused on the fight.
A Shadow Knight quietly sneaks through the dungeon.
He walks right up behind the cleric and says...
"...Boo." As he engages them in combat for the camp.
The group barely has time to react before chaos erupts.
Would that be terrifying?
Absolutely.
Would that become one of those stories that group tells for years?
Probably.
It would also be fun to put bounties on notorious player killers, although I have no idea how to make that system resistant to exploits.

Conclusion
What we don't need is another server where people mostly play normally and occasionally roleplay.
What we need is a server whose rules naturally create roleplay.
A server that demands a long, dangerous journey but rewards you with unforgettable adventures instead of simply faster progression.
This becomes the server you log into when the whole group is online, everyone has a few uninterrupted hours, and you're ready to disappear into another world.
The standard PvE server is still the main game. It's where you play when you only have an hour, when you don't feel like staying in character, or when you just want to relax and grind, where you arn't so constrained by the systems rules, you can have your game more gamified.
Both server types have value.
But I think a ruleset like this could deliver something MMOs rarely capture anymore: the feeling of a recurring D&D campaign.
The kind where you're still talking about last Friday's adventure two weeks later because the stories weren't scripted—they happened because the world, the rules, and the players created them together.
This type of server could even operate as a limited time run server, maybe it's only open during those times of the year when more people than not have a large amount of free time to dedicate into telling some stories.
But I digress, I find the conservations around server type and rulesets interesting. What are you looking for in an RP server or what could make this ruleset better? What other kinds of cool server types would you like to see?
