Kirrund I think the devs were gonna do what they did regardless. They were under a crunch, and 4 elements worth of interesting is a lot to bang out. The timeline they set for the reworks was ambitious, and you can really tell some classes didn't get as coherent or careful treatment as others, and that's fine. They're still all volunteer until Thursday morning, and some patience is in order.
That said, companion strike and element blast feel like some of the least impactful buttons I've ever pressed. And element blast being locked to the pet I have out feels extra bad when I used to at least be able to select the resist I was nuking against. Now I can't even do that- it's all magic 90% of the time because air pet or on a rare lucky session, half magic, half cold.
I was feeling pretty split between the pet classes for my solo character before the deep dives. BM killed all the spiritual flavor of the class and I lost interest. I guess the quasi-shamanic nature of the class was most of the appeal for me there. Ele kept some of the core class fantasy that made me love my (poor, SoE-abused) mage in EQ, but made the utility and elemental class fantasy more stale than at the start of beta. And, yeah, I want my nuke button to have a perceivable impact on healthbars, even if I'm not a wizard.
I guess after today's deep dives, I'm leaning necro? Or at least, maybe I'll hide out in a necro and wait to see if eles get another pass during EA. Not my first choice by any means, but they seem to have some more genuine variety and a deeper connection to their own lore...
